The WLP is inviting Year 8 students to participate in a pilot online Japanese language course.
This course is open to a maximum of 12 students and will be delivered in 45-minute sessions held on Tuesday mornings before school.
Students can join the sessions online from their own schools or attend in person at St Paul’s Girls’ School, where the sessions will be streamed live.
This 10-week taster course provides an ideal introduction to the full Edexcel Online Japanese GCSE programme. It gives students a structured and engaging start in learning Japanese, helping them build confidence in the language and understand what to expect from the full course.
Students will receive one hour of live online tuition per week and are expected to complete approximately one hour of homework between lessons. All learning materials—including workbooks, vocabulary sets, and kanji resources—are provided.
During the taster course, students will begin developing the four core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They will also learn hiragana, the first step in learning to read and write in Japanese.
Students will have access to:
If students choose to continue with the full three-year GCSE programme, they will cover the complete Edexcel syllabus, including all required vocabulary, grammar, and cultural content. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with approximately 200 kanji and will be fully prepared for the four final GCSE exam papers: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
This taster course is perfect for students who are curious about learning Japanese and want a strong, supportive introduction before committing to the full qualification.
